Update. The gentleman behind the Journal of M.O.D.O.K. Studies has created his own blog, where you can download a free PDF of this prestigious work of scholarship.

If you didn’t know, M.O.D.O.K. is a grand old Marvel villain designed by Jack Kirby. And Some kind of M.O.D.O.K. well-wisher has created March M.O.D.O.K. Madness, for which I submitted the above comic.

There’s just something about M.O.D.O.K. Perhaps it’s his comical physique. Perhaps it’s his name, which stands for Mental Organism Designed Only for Killing. (Interesting footnote – He was originally designed for “computing” rather than “killing,” but he changed his acronym when he turned to evil. Even though he may only be interested in killing, he wasn’t really designed for it, which makes it even funnier.) But whatever it is, it inspires obsession. There’s even a scholarly publication called the Journal of M.O.D.O.K. Studies. (Too bad it’s out of stock, but there’s an explanation for its scarcity here.)

Personally, my interest in Mental Organisms Designed Only for Killing began in the mid 90’s, when I was in 4th grade and everyone loved all the horrible Marvel stuff that was coming out. As a way of deciding who would get to be who when we pretended to be Marvel guys, we would take turns choosing trading cards (like these) from a particular friend’s collection. All the good ones were taken by the time my turn came around, and I didn’t want to be Dazzler, so my eye started gravitating toward M.O.D.O.K. Who was this thing? How did he get to be that way? How did he poop? It was clear who I had to be.

Later, I discovered 25 Premises Involving M.O.D.O.K., by Max Burbank, as well as this article by Protoclown, who it turns out is not the same person.

So share the love! Sumbit something to March M.O.D.O.K. Madness, even if you can’t draw so well. They accept all kinds of art, as long as it’s designed only for glorifying everyone’s favorite mental organism designed only for killing.
